Four years ago this week, April 15, 2008, we started building the connecting roof between the bathhouse (its roof is on the left above) and the house (far to the right beyond the picture frame). There are 10 bays between the bathhouse and the house. A bay is the space between columns. The nearest arc of columns in the picture above are 48’-0” from the center of the hocoka, whereas the farthest arc of columns is at 57’-0”. The columns are centered on radials that are 9 degrees apart and that originate at the center of the hocoka. Each bay has three common parallel trusses that are centered over the space between two columns. The middle of these is on a radial line from the center of the hocoka. There are trusses that are shared by adjacent bays. These we call “radial” trusses since they are directly above the columns and because they are at a 4.5 degree angle to the common trusses, are slightly longer in length. Combining circles and tangents to them results in interesting geometrical patterns and keeps us on our toes as far as cutting lumber goes.
