On the ridge road east of the house this morning a desiccated rattle snake, its tail still raised and its rattle fluttering in the hot dry wind. Apparently its central back was broken, perhaps by someone driving over it. The dirt pattern indicated that the tail was moving up to the time of death, as was the head. In fact, the head was coiled as if ready to strike.
