The ground was blanketed in snow five years ago Valentine’s evening, so Emile and i burned wood debris that we had gathered into “slash” piles during the fall and early winter. It was fascinating to watch the embers flitter upward on thermal trails before dissipating into the night sky. The nighttime temperature was cold, but the slash piles burned intensively hot. Facing the blazing flames we turned 180 degrees to cool our fronts and to warm our backsides, then every so often we turned again.
