Corey and i encountered this “injured” killdeer in the wicoti Friday morning when we were mowing. She was gallantly faking being unable to fly, flapping her wings against the ground, squawking as if injured, and employing all her inherited traits trying to lure us toward her as she limped and flapped away. When we didn’t follow, she returned and made sure we saw that she apparently was injured and therefore easy prey. But instead of following her, we cautiously scanned the ground until we located her nest: four speckled eggs in a patch of sage. What an aromatic location for a nest!
