Oko Wikcemna Nunpa ake Nunpa

Monday, Jul 20 to Sunday, Jul 26, 2015: high 98, low 53

The little rabbit above lives along the road to the gate that i walk to once or twice a day. At first she was very shy, but beginning this week she became more and more accustomed to me. For instance, she would dart out from the grass along the side of the road ahead of me and run away kicking her legs and snapping her ears, glancing back to check that i was paying attention. Once she seemed to beckon me to follow her, so i did and she led me away from the road to her home, a well-concealed hole in the ground. Sometimes she would run toward me as i approached. Then this morning, Sunday, she stepped out into the road as i approached but instead of running toward me or ahead of me, she hesitantly stayed put. When i was just about to her, she moved into the grass as if to hide but in actuality she made sure i could see her as you can see in the photo below.

So i stopped and stood still. And she came back onto the road and tentatively approached me.

She went directly to my left foot. Before i could wonder what she had in mind, she nibbled that shoe and then turned and nibbled the other shoe.

Having apparently satisfied herself that the shoes weren’t too tasty, she sat back …

… looked around …

… and before she could decide what to do next, i said it was time for me to continue on to the gate. She posed for the picture below, apparently with her left front foot held up and ready to shake hands and say, “toksa ake wacinyankinkte ye” (I will see you again later).
