Yesterday, Saturday, was the last day of 2016. December 31st. And in some way, the cairn symbolized the fact that even though 2016 and 2017 are different years, they still are part of the uninterrupted continuum of time. A tick of a human-made clock and a flip of a calendar page are all that differentiates one year from the next. Likewise, yesterday morning the cairn apparently was completely different depending on your point of view. If looking from the west, its rocks were dry. But if looking from the east, the rocks were snow-covered. Regardless of one’s point of view, it is one single cairn. “Opposite sides of the same coin” is a common aphorism. Here at Wingsprings, the equivalent might be “opposite slopes of the same cairn.”
