Thursday early evening, about a quarter after 6, found this snapper along the bank of Turtle Pond. He had been in that spot for quite a while, judging by the stick that is dried into the mud on top of his carapace. He has big buggy eyes and a long serated tail. What an ancienct-looking creature. At this same time, maybe forty feet north, there was another snapper laying on the bottom of a shallow pond. Most of her shell was above the water line. It was covered in moss. Even though her head was under water, the water was clear, so i could see that she was watching me. She didn’t move in any perceptible way. Neither did this one in the photo above. Am not sure about their gender, but the online sources say that male snappers have longer tails than females. The tail of the one above sure looks long, but i couldn’t see the tail of the one in the water so cannot compare them.
