From the image above, this evening apparently was a Wingsprings sunset day. Typically this late August Wingsprings sunset day is August 30th, as is noted on the Wingsprings website. But that date and the dates of the other sunset day and the two sunrise days are “plus or minus” one day. Fortunately, i was here and outside watching the sunset this evening when i realized that this might be the day instead of tomorrow! Quickly grabbed the camera phone and took some pictures standing in front of the “nose” window, under the pointed overhanging roof. If i had been standing directly on the Wingsprings west-east axis, the point of the roof would be directly above the Butte and sun. As the photo shows, i was a little south of the axis—and by “a little” i mean less than a foot. Maybe tomorrow evening i can do a better job of being aligned. One other thing about the sunset day: the path of the setting sun is not perpendicular to the horizon. In other words, the sun does not drop straight down. Instead, its path is a slicing angle from south to north, which is left to right in the photo. So when the bottom of the sun is touching the top of the Butte might be one way to define a Wingsprings sunset day; and when the sun is half below the horizon and on axis with the Butte might be another way and another day; and then when the top of the sun disappears beneath the horizon and is on axis with the Butte might be a third way and day. This evening, the sun appeared to be half below the horizon when it was also directly on axis with the Butte.
